His first start in the series came in 1999, when he drove a personally-owned vehicle into the field at ORP. After starting 34th, Sands finished 27th, running all but seveteen laps. Sands made the event largely due to the fact that only thirty-four trucks were entered (out of thirty-six maximum)
Sands squeaked his way into the 2003 race at South Boston, being the last car on the field. (36th) He also finished the race in 36th, not even completing a lap before retiring from the event.
