Cox debuted in 1982, competing at Richmond. Starting positions in the field of twenty-eight are unknown, and despite the fact that Cox fell some seven laps down in the race, Cox still managed to drive to a career-best 12th place finish.
Cox did not fare so well in his 1983 events, however. He returned to Richmond in the spring, where he finished 23rd. In his only race outside of Richmond, competing at Martinsville, Cox started 39th (only race where his start was known) and crashed out on the second lap to finish last (40th).
