The 1996 Sundrop 300 was a Busch Series event held at Hickory Speedway on April 6, 1996. David Green won his first event of the year, holding off Hermie Sadler for the pole. Green now held a 166-point championship lead on Randy LaJoie, who finished third.
Green was also the polesitter for this race, turning in a speed of 88.393 mph. He bested outside polesitter Kevin Lepage, who was making his first start with the #88 Farmer's Choice team. A number of drivers did not qualify for the event: Johnny Rumley, Tommy Houston, Shane Hall, Dennis Setzer, Mark Green, Chris Diamond, Terry Brooks, and Bill Ingle. Houston wound up driving the #0 car in the race that his son, Andy Houston, had qualified into the field.
