The Race::1994 Brickyard 400 was a NASCAR Winston Cup Series and Winston West Series (now ) combination race held August 6, 1994 at Track::Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This was the first NASCAR race held at the famed racetrack. Rumors had been circulating for years that NASCAR would begin racing at the speedway, but they were not confirmed until 1993. 22-year-old Jeff Gordon won his second career Winston Cup race, holding off Brett Bodine by just over a half-second. In the points, Dale Earnhardt took the points lead from Ernie Irvan, gaining a 27-point advantage. The race was televised live on ABC.

Qualifying notes[]

Rick Mast shocked everyone when he won his second career pole for this race. Dale Earnhardt started on the outside pole, while then point leader Ernie Irvan qualified seventeenth.

  • This was the first Winston Cup race in which all three of the Bodines (Geoff, Brett, and Todd) led the race. Controversy erupted from this when Brett wrecked Geoff midway through the race. It was later revealed that the incident was the result of disagreements the two were having.
