Larry Pearson turned in his second pole of the 1988 season pacing the field in with a lap of 95.292 mph. Ronald Cooper took the outside pole, points leader Mike Alexander took the third starting spot and eventual winner Tommy Houston grabbed the 10th spot on the starting grid.
